Cheesman Park is located in central Denver, southeast of Downtown and provides city dwellers with the most delightful bit of country in the city. The neighborhoods borders are approximately Downing Street on the West, York Street on the East, Colfax Avenue on the North and 6th Avenue on the South. Cheesman Park itself has inexact borders, as it is framed on 3 sides by private residences, but in general it?s located in the center of the neighborhood between Humboldt and Race Street/the 23 acre Denver Botanical Gardens on the east, 13th Avenue on the north and 8th Avenue on the south.
In the late 19th century, the land that is now Cheesman Park was Prospect Hill Cemetery which leads to great intrigue as to what spirits may to this day inhabit the earth. Cheesman Park has a definite urban character with its density and closeness to the central part of the city. A wonderful aspect of the park is its proximity to The Denver Botanic Gardens where events are ongoing throughout the year. Christmas lights and summer concerts are the best! Other favorite park activities include taking advantage of the beautiful grounds and amazing location by walking or running in the park (people and happy dogs) and the Farmers Markets in the summer are fabulous.
Many local and long standing neighborhood ‘haunts’ are Lik’s Homemade Ice Cream on 13th and Race (a favorite stop any time of year), great happy hours at Park Tavern on 11th and Ogden and Wyman’s 13th and Vine. Brunch: Shells & Sauce on 12th Avenue. Other favs are Dazbog Coffee on 9th and Downing, a great wine bar, Tastes, on 17th & Downing, and who doesn’t need a little Mexican food now and then – Las Margaritas on 17th
The neighborhood is predominantly middle class with a median household income of $42,477 and a higher average level of educational attainment than the city as a whole. There are more renters than homeowners in the neighborhood, though, as the multi unit buildings are and a mix of newer and older apartment buildings, and conversions of older mansions into apartments.
